Council of Europe's Action Plan on protecting refugee and migrant children now officially adopted

On 19th May 2017, the Council of Europe´s Action Plan on protecting refugee and migrant children (2017-2019) was adopted by the Committee of Ministers in Cyprus.

All Council of Europe’s member states are somehow affected by the people seeking refuge or migrating to Europe. The most vulnerable group coming is unaccompanied children. According to the Council of Europe’s Action Plan, children should be treated as children, whether they are asylum-seekers or migrants. With the adoption of this Action Plan, a special focus is on unaccompanied children and its three main pillars are:

1) Ensuring access to rights and child-friendly procedures

2) Providing effective protection

3) Enhancing the integration of children who will remain in Europe

A gender sensitive approach is taken into account in this Action Plan, as girls are more vulnerable to risks of abuse and exploitation. This Action Plan will be implemented from now on until 2019.
