The impact of Brexit

Our member organisation, Youth Work Ireland, is one of the youth organisations where the results of Brexit are easy to see.

The impact of Brexit will be felt all around the EU and beyond but nowhere more dramatically than in Ireland and of course the UK itself. One of the groups most concerned about these impacts are young people. Young people voted overwhelmingly against Brexit in the UK and some have argued that had 16 and 17 year olds the vote the referendum would have produced a remain result.

Due to the seriousness of the situation five youth organisations from the UK and Ireland came together to give young people a direct input and say in to the decisions on Brexit and other matters they will have to deal with in the future. The work was led by Youth Cymru with the assistance of Youth Work Ireland, UK Youth, Youth Scotland and Youth Action Northern Ireland. Supported by ERASMUS+ the work focussed on a meeting of the British Irish Parliamentary Assembly in late 2016 in Cardiff. This body brings together parliamentarians from The UK and Irish Parliaments and the devolved assemblies in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Young people prepared their “asks” in Dublin and met directly with decision makers in Cardiff and later reviewed the process in Edinburgh. So successful was the work that The British Irish Parliamentary Assembly has invited some of the young people back to make further presentations at their next meeting in July in Kilkenny. The work showed how young people can access decision makers through the youth work process but most of all created real transnational bonds and friendships across the UK and Ireland.
