Launch of the 2016 Youth Development Index and Report

On Friday 21 October, the Commonwealth Secretariat launched the 2016 Youth Development Index and Report. This index examines the state of youth development in 183 countries, including 49 of the 52 Commonwealth countries.

The Commonwealth defines youth development as: “Enhancing the status of young people, empowering them to build on their competencies and capabilities for life. It will enable them to contribute to and benefit from a politically stable, economically viable, and legally supportive environment, ensuring their full participation as active citizens in their countries.”

It looks at five themes, or domains, measuring levels of Education, Health and Well-being, Employment and Opportunity, Political Participation and Civic Participation among young people. The domains were selected on the basis of their impact on the development of young people. According to the index, Germany achieved the top rank for youth development, and the Central African Republic had the lowest score.

The index is guided by the Commonwealth definition of youth as people between the ages of 15 and 29.

The development of this index is part a strategy to encourage evidence-based youth policy. You can examine youth development per country here: http://youthdevelopmentindex.org/
