My New Neighbour

The Austrian Association of Youth Information Centres (BÖJI) published a new brochure this summer: “Mein neuer Nachbar” (My New Neighbour).

As in many countries in Europe, the so called “migration crisis” was on the agenda from summer 2015 and it remains a major topic in the news and media. The Austrian Network of Youth Information Centres decided to focus on this topic from the perspective of young people in Austria. We therefore asked young people during workshops what questions they have concerning refugees and migration. This collection of questions was the starting point for the development of the story of Sofie and Ramy. Sofie is from Austria and she meets with her new neighbour in school, Ramy, who fled Syria and who has now arrived in Austria together with his family. The story focuses on questions like “Why & how did you flee?”, “Why did you choose Austria as a destination?”, “Under what circumstances do you live now?” and “What are your dreams for the future?”

The brochure is in easy German and in a graphic novel style, on each page there is also key information provided. With this publication we encourage young people to talk about this topic and to discuss common prejudices. This brochure was developed in cooperation with UNHCR Austria (The UN Refugees Agency) and it was subsidised by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Families and Youth.
