Build your own drone educational workshop

The Youth Board of Cyprus in collaboration with the Technical School of Avgorou has been implementing since 2019 a skills development program for high school students through training in 3D designing, printing, assembling, programming, and flying drones.

The program falls within the broader framework of the objectives of the Youth Board of Cyprus of empowering young people, especially the youth living in rural areas; that is also one of the European Objectives for EU Youth. Such young people have fewer opportunities for training, education and entertainment opportunities than young people living in urban areas. Thus, via the implementation of this program, the Youth Board of Cyprus aims to help them discover new areas of interest and possibly follow a different professional and academic path. Simultaneously, they are given the opportunity to develop technology skills, building and creating skills, come into contact with technology in the field of STEAM and expand their horizons in the field of education they choose to follow and also in the field of interest that they will choose to follow as adults.

The program will last for two academic years, and 240-280 students are expected to participate. Each training cycle consists of a total of 10 two-day meetings, and during the 2nd year, a flight precision competition and a drone aerial photography competition will be held. The first training cycle took place at the facilities of the Avgorou Technical School, where the necessary equipment (3D printers, laptops with the required software, CNC machines, Drones, etc.) is available in combination with qualified professionals.

This year, due to the Covid-19 pandemic that came up and overturned what everyone considered to be “normal”, to implement this program, the Youth Board has equipped the teachers who have undertaken the program with computers. The training takes place in every school unit of the broader Famagusta region of Cyprus.
