Too many questions unanswered

Are we moving towards true gender equality between men and women? This question still needs to be answered. The current rise of feminism often seems to commodify the movement rather than sincerely striving for equal rights for both genders.

It is clear and logical that women must lead the achievement of equal rights. Hence, initiatives focusing on women's empowerment are welcome as long as they are within the established timeframe. March, designated as women's month, and its extension to February and April, along with explicit cases of gender-based violence, highlight the importance of addressing gender disparities. However, what happens if women's empowerment takes place in June? This scenario becomes uncomfortable, provokes visceral reactions and ensures confrontation. This was precisely my experience in a high school when I presented the following text to congratulate the girls who graduated in 2017:

On this particular occasion, I wholeheartedly congratulate the 99 young women graduating from high school today. Until now, I believed that, as parents, we were responsible for inculcating values in our daughters and sons, shaping their understanding of social norms. To my surprise and delight, you, the graduates, have taught me many new things, underlining that the progress of society is intrinsically linked to listening to the younger generation. While we were used to our version of normality, you have come to challenge everything. You refuse to accept the social roles imposed on women and demand the same rights as the opposite sex.

Progress inevitably comes from rebellion and the need for change rather than acceptance. While change can be disruptive, it is true that progress ultimately benefits us all. Your essential involvement in the struggle for true gender equality is evident in young women's attendance, participation and mobilisation during the recent 8 March events.

I congratulate you on completing an important academic milestone and your unwavering spirit in advancing rights and improving coexistence in the world you inhabit.

CONGRATULATIONS, MILLENNIALS! THE WORLD IS IN YOUR HANDS. YOU HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO PRESERVE AND IMPROVE IT.

Unfortunately, the '99 graduates did not hear this congratulatory message. Parents and teacher representatives found it inappropriate, offensive, and confrontational. The reasons for its inappropriateness, offensive nature, and confrontational intent remain unanswered, leaving many questions unanswered.
