YIminds Survey Report: Unveiling Youth Mental Health Literacy

In an era where young people's mental health is a pressing concern, the YIminds project is taking bold steps to make a difference. This initiative focuses on equipping youth information workers with the basic knowledge and tools to promote youth wellbeing and provide first-hand support to young people in distress and at risk of developing mental health issues.

Between April and May 2023, a survey about mental health literacy among youth workers was shared through emails and social media. The survey, available in Dutch, English, Estonian, French, German, Greek, and Spanish, reached 365 responses from 25 European countries. The ages of the respondents range from 20 to 70 years old. Two focus group sessions completed the survey to add quantitative data to the general analysis.

50% of respondents are youth information workers, while 37% are youth workers, followed by representatives of youth associations. Most responses gathered came from Austria, Belgium, Estonia, Spain & the United Kingdom.

This report shows that youth information workers know that they need more training and resources about mental health even if they do their best to assist young people facing mental health issues. Also, around 60% of youth information workers said they don't have a protocol for urgent mental health cases, and 32 of them think it's needed.
