ECOSOC Youth Forum 2024

From April 16 to 18, 2024, the ECOSOC Youth Forum brought together young leaders and representatives from around the globe at the United Nations headquarters in New York. This annual gathering provided a crucial platform for dialogue on solutions to challenges affecting youth well-being and an opportunity to advance youth-driven initiatives in support of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Guided by the theme "Reinforcing the 2030 Agenda and eradicating poverty in times of multiple crises: the effective delivery of sustainable, resilient and innovative solutions," the forum addressed key SDGs under review in 2024. These included no poverty (SDG 1), zero hunger (SDG 2), climate action (SDG 13), peace, justice, and strong institutions (SDG 16), and partnerships for the goals (SDG 17). Participants engaged in plenary sessions, interactive discussions, and regionally-based dialogues, sharing their vision and innovative solutions to global issues.

The 2024 ECOSOC Youth Forum also served as a preparatory event for the upcoming Summit of the Future, scheduled for September 2024. Young delegates had the chance to contribute to intergovernmental consultations, offering recommendations and ideas to shape the future of international cooperation and sustainable development.

This year’s forum was co-organized by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) and the UN Youth Office in collaboration with various youth organizations and stakeholders. The event underscored the vital role of youth as innovators and change agents, demonstrating their readiness to tackle global challenges and drive forward the implementation of the SDGs.

At the centre of the UN development system, ECOSOC is responsible for promoting higher standards of living, full employment, and economic and social progress; identifying solutions to international economic, social and health problems; facilitating international cultural and educational cooperation; and encouraging universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.

Since 2022, ERYICA has held consultative status. This status provides NGOs with access to not only ECOSOC but also its many subsidiary bodies, the various human rights mechanisms of the United Nations, ad-hoc processes on small arms, and special events organised by the President of the General Assembly.
