Insights from the Latest Flash Eurobarometer on Youth and Democracy
In preparation for the European elections on June 6-9, 2024, and as a follow-up to the European Year of Youth 2022, the European Commission conducted the latest Flash Eurobarometer survey targeting young people aged 15-30. This survey explored key topics such as youth voting intentions, civic participation, engagement with the EU, and expectations from the EU for their generation.
Youth Engagement and Voting Intentions
The survey revealed that a significant majority of young Europeans (64%) intend to vote in the upcoming European elections. However, 13% of eligible young voters indicated they would not participate, highlighting the need for further efforts to engage this demographic. When it comes to staying informed about the EU, social media emerged as the primary source (56%), followed by TV (49%) and online news platforms (33%).
Civic Participation and Societal Impact
Civic participation among young people is robust, with 64% having engaged in activities of various organisations over the past year. Sports clubs were the most popular (33%), followed by youth organisations (18%) and volunteering activities (17%). Additionally, 48% of young Europeans reported taking action to effect societal change, with significant involvement in human rights (34%) and climate action (33%).
Awareness and Expectations from the EU
The survey also shed light on young people's awareness of EU initiatives and their expectations. While 49% were aware of Erasmus+ opportunities for students, fewer were familiar with other engagement methods, such as contacting EU officials or visiting EU institutions.
Looking ahead, young people expect the EU to prioritise preserving peace (37%), combating poverty and inequality (34%), promoting human rights and democracy (30%), and enhancing job opportunities for youth (28%).
