Thousands of young people tell Young Scot about the issues that mean the most to them in BIG Survey

Over 2,000 young people, aged 11 to 25, took part in the BIG Survey conducted by Young Scot from September to January. They identified affordable housing, climate change, and poverty as their leading concerns, with nearly 60% citing the lack of affordable housing and the climate emergency as their main worries for the future.

The research also gives insight into young people’s thoughts on wellbeing, social media, health, and AI. Almost half (48%) of respondents already use AI, and 47% stated that their mental health is worse now than a few years ago. 60% of young people also reported that education is the most important thing for young people in Scotland right now.

I am worried about leaving school and not being able to get a job, a house, have a family. What’s it all about at the end of the day? I feel no sense of control or influence on these major topics that will affect my life.”

A 12-year-old added, “Poverty may prevent me and other young people in Scotland from moving on to further education like university. The cost of living and affordable housing may also affect young people’s education and their ability to buy a house when they are older.

The results were presented at a live webinar, during which attendees heard directly from a panel of young volunteers about the issues raised in the Young Scot BIG Survey and their impact on their day-to-day lives.
