Cost crisis information hub for young people in Scotland

Young people in Scotland can now access money-saving opportunities, financial information and tips on looking after their mental health with Young Scot’s new information hub. The hub was created following research by Young Scot which showed that 91% of young people have already been impacted by the recent cost of living increases in Scotland.

Young Scot’s new information hub provides a one-stop-shop for young people to access key financial information and support. It will be updated continually during the cost of living crisis and includes information about saving money and how to access the hundreds of in-person and online discounts – such as money off exercise classes, cinema tickets and food shopping. It also links to Young Scot’s #AyeFeel mental health and emotional wellbeing resources, and information on government welfare support and how to make a claim.

Recent research by Young Scot, in partnership with the Money and Pensions Service, also showed that almost a third of the 424 young people surveyed felt the increases in the cost of fuel bills and food has impacted them to a great extent – with 54 people stating it had impacted on their lives completely. In response, Young Scot is continuing to develop new discount offers that will help young people to save money whilst also having fun. These discounts are in the categories that young people have suggested – including leisure, retail and health. Young Scot already has discounts with 370 partners in 1,110 in-store locations and 300 online discounts. Also, the Young Scot Membership website, with nearly 90,000 young people signed up, is also supporting young people’s emotional wellbeing by offering a range of opportunities, rewards, and perks.

Young people living in Scotland can also apply for free bus travel using their Young Scot National Entitlement Card. This is already having a phenomenal impact on young people’s social mobility. Since January alone, young people have made over 21 million bus journeys for free. By supporting the choice to travel sustainably early in their lives, the scheme will continue to have a positive impact for young people and Scotland’s environment.
