Youth Information Masterclass for Estonian Youth Workers on Sex Education
The Education and Youth Board of Estonia organised a youth information masterclass for youth workers, focusing on addressing topics related to sex and sexuality in their work with young people.
The need to discuss this topic arose from youth workers themselves, who emphasised that issues related to sex education should be explored more comprehensively within the context of youth information. According to participants, the biggest challenges currently are their insecurity and a lack of knowledge about the diversity of the field.
During the masterclass, participants explored the components of sexual education, the meaning of sex positivity and many other definitions, and how to support young people's understanding of sex and sexuality. It was also highlighted that sexual education should not just be about talking to young people but rather engaging them in discussions—youth involvement and participation are key.
Sexual education should not be limited to one-time activities but should be a continuous process throughout childhood and adolescence. Sexual education often focuses mainly on pregnancy prevention or infections, but in reality, it covers a much broader range of topics and perspectives. The masterclass provided information on various reliable and evidence-based guidelines and support materials, such as the WHO standards on sexual education, books, activity plans, and podcasts.
The masterclass was led by Kristina Birk-Vellemaa, a recognised sexual education expert, sexologist, and anthropologist with international experience. She is also a member of the Estonian Association of Youth Workers and leads its sexual education working group. This highlights the growing need for youth workers to acquire increasingly specialised knowledge to support young people in an ever-changing and diverse social environment.
